Importance of the Fed in the U.S. Economy Essay Example for Free
Importance of the provide in the U.S. Economy EssayApart from the investors and the consumers of the United States, the federal official Reserve happens to be the most important pretender in the United States economy. The central coast of the U. S. , the national Reserve (comm only when referred to as the Fed) includes a a federal government agency, the Board of Governors, in Washington, D. C. , and 12 regional Reserve Banks in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Kansas City, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, Richmond, San Francisco, and St. Louis (The Federal Reserve). This government agency at the heart of the United States economy, controlled through with(predicate) federal information coming from several(a) quarters, determines how investors and consumers would behave in the future. In so doing, the Fed plays a weighty hand in the functioning of the U. S. economy. The Federal Reserve is responsible for overseeing the functioning of banks. The Congress, on th e some other hand, is responsible for overseeing the functioning of the Fed. Dr. Robert Keleher, the Chief Macroeconomist of the Joint Economic Committee, expresses the importance of these facts with an emphasis on the role of the Fed in the U.S. economy As the Nations Central Bank, the Federal Reserve is granted special privileges and so assumes the responsibilities and characteristics of such a bank. It monopolizes the issuance of paper gold, serves as banker for both the government and commercial banks, and acts as lender of last resort. The latter, in turn, calls for bank regulatory responsibilities. Since Federal Reserve operations work to centralize reserves (Federal Reserve notes and deposits form a bad portion of bank reserves), they entail responsibility for reserve management and hence monetary policy. Two critically important macroeconomic functions of the Central Bank, therefore, argon the aliment and achievement of price and financial organisation stability (i. e. , stable monetary policy and the provision of lender-of-last-resort services). The importance of congressional oversight of the Federal Reserve cannot be overemphasized. These functions are important, for example, because they imply that the Federal Reserve controls and hence is responsible for the management of total spending or aggregate demand as well as swelling. In carrying out its monetary policy management (via manipulating reserves), the Federal Reserve influences relate directsespecially short-term ratesas well as foreign exchange rates and other financial market prices. And in times of financial crisis, the Federal Reserves lender-of-last-resort function stabilizes the entire financial system. (The Importance, 1997). The Fed has the power to change the money supply in the United States (Monetary Policy). An increase in money supply tends to lower interest rates, which in turn whitethorn increase investment around the nation in addition to consumer spending. A decrease in the supply of money impart raise interest rates.Given that raised rates of interest are expected to reduce consumer spending as well as capital investment, thereby reducing demand as well as prices, the Federal Reserve can hope to control inflation by decreasing money supply. The Federal Reserve uses interest rates as a tool to influence economic activity. The funds rate, which is the interest that banks charge each other on all-night loans, happens to be the Federal Reserves primary tool of monetary policy, seeing that this rate affects several other interests rates charged to consumers and to businesses (Associated Press, 2006).The interest rate influences money supply and various components of the U. S. economy. Most importantly, it is this tool of monetary policy that helps to determine the financial health of the people of the States with respect to the state of the economy. How lots money common people and businesses would be able to spend in a given time is, in fact, the res ponsibility of the Federal Reserve to queue and readjust through its monetary policy. The amount of spending in the economy is closely related to the standard of living of the Americans.Hence, the Feds role of qualification monetary policy work for the United States is oft understood to be the most crucial one. The second most important role of the Fed is thinking to be Banking Supervision. Seeing as a weighed down and strong financial system is essential to the health of the economy and the effectiveness of monetary policy, the central bank of the United States supervises as well as regulates financial institutions throughout the nation. By so doing, the bank of the banks is in a better position to settle sound policy decisions (Banking Supervision). What is more, by ensuring that the investment and commercial banks around the nation are engaging in sound business practices, the Federal Reserve guarantees the investors and consumers of America that their moneys and economic in terests would remain well guarded. The third function of the Federal Reserve is connected to the second, which is connected to the first. As a bank for banks the Fed not only supervises the latter, but also provides essential financial services to depository institutions, such as banks, credit unions, and savings and loans. Just as the commercial banks handle minutes among their customers, in addition to the transactions of their customers with the customers of other banks the Federal Reserve handles transactions among banks. These financial services provided by the central bank include the electronic absent of funds between banks the collection of checks at various depository institutions and the distribution as well as receiving of U. S. dollars and cents among and from the depository institutions, which require freshly minted money on a regular basis (Financial function). The Fed also is a bank for the United States government. Referred to as the federal governments monetary a gent, the central bank provides financial services to the governments Department of Treasury. In addition, the bank for the government sells and redeems government securities, for example, Saving Bonds and Treasury Bills (Financial Services). It is at this point that the third most important function of the Federal Reserve joins with the first.By buying and selling government securities, the Federal Reserve changes the money supply the selling of government securities decreases the money supply, and the buying of such securities increases the supply of money in the U. S. economy (FOMC). Whether the Federal Reserve must buy or sell government securities at a given time is determined by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which is a fundamental come apart of the Federal Reserves Board and composed of the Board of Governorsand five reserve-bank presidents. The FOMC is also responsible for making decisions about the direction that the interest rate should take. While the investor s may only speculate about the pertinent monetary policy decisions of the FOMC, the Americans may continue to enjoy sound sleep at night with the knowledge that the Federal Reserve is a highly responsible agent of the government which has accompanied the economy through periods of very high growth, especially in the most young decades (FOMC).Given the above facts about the central bank of the United States, it would not be an exaggeration to claim that the Federal Reserve is the banker of each American. While context of use the monetary policy and performing its other functions, the Federal Reserve has the best interests of the Americans and the American economy at heart. Whether it is unemployment rate that must be fixed, or the inflation rate that must be adjusted to account for technological improvements the Fed is in charge of correcting the errors. The changes facing the economy at any time are varied. The Federal Reserve must sift through the information about the economy tha t it is presented with, analyze the information with an emphasis on the interest of the Americans, and then make sound policy decisions that would impact the future of the economy. During low growth periods, the Federal Reserve is looked up to for massive corrections in the system, generally carried out through appropriate monetary policy decisions. The American public has high expectations attached to the Fed in times of economic hardship. In periods of high growth, on the other hand, the Fed continues to oversee the functioning of the economy to check for the menace of inflation, etc. Thus, this bank of America is constantly overseeing the economy and overruling bad choices in the employment of the resources procurable to the U. S. What is more, the United States economy at present cannot envision a time when it would be no more affiliated with the Fed.Rather, the Federal Reserve is indispensable in the U. S. economic system. References Associated Press. (2006, May 31). Federal Re serve Minutes Show Uncertainty Over Future Interest Rate Hikes. Fox News. House prices in uk
House worths in ukIntroductionAccording to a newborn write up from Halifax one of the largest mortgage lenders. House prices in UK have defeat inflation over the aside 50 course of studys. It says that have risen 273% between 1959 and 2009 an average of 2.7% annually. But if measured by current prices, its uneven. The fastest growth was from 1999 to 2009 by 5% and in previous decade i.e. from 1989 and 1999, price fall by 24%. The rising price was on these years i.e. 1971-73, 1977-80, 1985-89 and the highest price was in 1998 and 2007. The study also noned that coincided with a very strong increase in owner occupation of homes. In 1961, only 43% of nominateholds owned the homes in which they withstandd by 2008 that had risen to 68%. The strongest rise in owner occupation pass judgment occurred in the 1980s. The proportion that is privately rented also fell sharply over the past 50 years from 33% in 1961 to 14% in 2008. www.ft.com cited on 21/02/10.Demand And Supply Of Housin gThe comparison of prices in local and regional lodging trades is an example of microeconomics. Lets see the interaction between buyer and seller with prices creation offered and agreed before a final transaction is made. The transaction for sept in UK depends upona) The price that the seller is willing to agree for their lieu with prospective buyer.b) The actual price that the buyer is willing and able to pay.Buyers place offers for a property that the seller can either accept or reject.A Sellers MarketWhen there is demand in a grocery for housing and short of computable quality property i.e. means the supply is scarce.A Buyers MarketWhen demand for good quality and bad quality property is weak than there should few offer or can negotiate the price than its published price. When the demand for houses in a particular bea increases (perhaps because of an inflow of population into the argona, or a rise in incomes following a fall in unemployment), there is upward pressure on mar ket prices. Often the supply of available housing in the market is relatively inelastic. This is because there are time lags between a change in price and an increase in the supply of new properties becoming available, or former(a) homeowners deciding to put their properties onto the market. When demand shifts outwards and supply is inelastic the result is a large rise in market price and a relatively small expansion of the quantity of houses traded. As supply becomes more than elastic over time, assuming the conditions of demand remain unchanged, we conceive to see downward pressure on prices and a further increase in the equilibrium quantity of houses bought and sold. Factors affecting housing price1. Growth of tangible incomesPrivately owned housing is a normal good for most people. As standard of living rise, the demand for house expands.2. Consumer federal agencyConsumer has a snappy role in the housing sector. When the rescue is sustaining growth and rising property than its but natural that the number of house buyers and shifts the balance of power in the market.3. JobsThe early(a) factor is job. if it involves making a long-term commitment through a mortgage lender, changes in unemployment. If theres unemployment and average incomes are apparent to be lower than confidence among buyers would affect.4. Housing taxes and subsidies.Government policies, taxes and subsidies also affect the housing prices.Demand factors affecting house priceFUTURE EXPECTATIONS 1. 2012 London exceptionals May Help UK EconomyBritains recovery can be done because of the infrastructure projects for 2012 London Olympics. Total spending is estimated for 2012 9.3 (US$13.8) billion. There will be two major beneficiaries of the 2012 games Londons crumbling mass transport organisation East London, where the Olympic Stadium, the Olympic Village and other major facilities will be located. To accommodate the number of people in a city, the improvement is personnel casualty on for transport of London upgrading to the London over ground. The Olympic delivery authority has given 3.1bn for the construction of the Olympic park. The budget for this is 1 billion for the Olympic village, and 400 jillion for the media centre. This will benefit to the housing sector in UK. The more people going to accommodate in this country the space to live .That would benefit the housing sector of UK. http//www.financemarkets.co.uk/ cited on 15/02/102. UK Mortgage Supply CrashA loan to finance the purchase of real estates, ordinarily with specified payment and affair rate. The borrower (mortgagor) gives the lender (mortgagee) a lien on the property as collateral for the loan.www.investorwords.comThe data collected by British Bankers of link is that the no of mortgages approved for purchase of house was 17,773 against 64,014 in July, 2007 a fall of 72%.The mortgage market clearly remains as extreme incumbrance measures are taken due to the collapse of Britains mortgage bank s.The supply has fallen so the average value of loan offered for house purchases which peaked at 159,600 in June 2007, and now averages at just 116,700. Home owners imagining that equity of 25% despite the fall in house prices to date may in fact on attempting to remortgage find that remortgage purposes and hence not offered any loan at favorable interest rates. The interest rate cut from 5% straight to 2% in 2 months and 600billion bank bailout package. The net effect to this area was total amount of mortgage loans were outstanding the amount was 35billion, against to a stable market. And in 2009 the house price rose by 2.9% says government. But the data of nationwide and Halifax says that UK house price rose by 6%nearly. The fastest growth was in 2009 went up by 4.9%. http//www.independent.co.uk/ cited on 16/02/10 Repossessions Extreme Government PressureIn an attempt to limit the number of repossessions during 2009, the government is putting extreme pressure on the mortgage banks to ensure repossessions are a last resort. Up until September 2008 this amounted mostly to hot air from the politicians, however after having taken major interest in most of Britains biggest banks there are strong signs that the banks are starting to comply with their new majority shareholders wishes (the government), that look set to increasingly introduce initiatives to inhibit the number of repossessions. The most recent action on this front was by RBS which stated that it would give a 6 month reprieve to its mortgage customers that are in arrears before initiating court repossession orders. Whilst the measures will undoubtedly mean that less homes will now be repossessed than would have otherwise been the case, however it does act as a two edged sword in that whilst supply of repossessed homes onto the market will be less, at the same time the mortgage banks are being forced to carry loss making loans that prove costly to administer and without bringing in much needed revenue i.e. tieing up resources that could have at rest(p) to more profitable mortgage customers. The Governments initiatives to reduce repossessions will have no discernable impact on the housing market price trends either compulsive or negative due to the points about tieing up capital in loss making costly to administer loan accounts. The number of homes expected to be repossessed during 2008 is now revised lower to 55,000 with the expectations of 65,000 homes for 2009 in advance of further government interventions in the housing market to prevent repossessions on an larger scale. The government is employed on a programme of forcing down mortgage interest rates by a series of deep unprecedented cuts in UK interest rates towards the target of 1% , and possibly even lower to make up the shortfall in the lack of responsiveness by mortgage lenders in cut their rates, who at the same time have tightened lending criteria due to the increased risk of defaults. The mortgage interest rates hav e fallen significantly from the mention crisis extremes and are heading to below 4% which implies a strong pointer for get for house prices as the cost of servicing mortgages falls and therefore should support a recovery in housing prices. However the housing market has always been that of being driven by sentiment, in that it is the trend in house prices that is most significant and NOT the cost of servicing the mortgages, it is this which pushed house prices to above X7 earnings, where people were prepared to take on large mortgages at high interest rates for the prime reason that house price gains in the order of 15% per annum or more were far above that of the mortgage interest payments of normally 6%. However now that the housing bubble has burst has resulted in the trend and sentiment reversing as house prices have already fallen by nearly 20%, which equates to a loss of 40,000 on an average 200,000 house that is now worth 160,000, which averages to a fall in value of 2500 per month. Against which a typical mortgage of say 160k on a 200k property at 6% would result in monthly interest charge of 800 per month. Now with mortgage rates having typically fallen to 4% which is resulting in an reduced interest payment of 533 per month or a significant fall of 277 per month that galore(postnominal) commentators are taking as a cue for imminent price stability. Unfortunately the 277 saving is just above 10% of the amount that home owners are typically losing in value per month Therefore the interest rate cuts are having little if no effect on the housing market, I first warned of this likely outcome back in February 2008 that interest rate cuts will not stop house prices from falling. This therefore implies that low interest rates are not an important factor at this point in determining house price trend during 2009, as housing market sentiment is decidedly bearish and will take time to first stabilise and then start to recover. UK Economic Recession Unemplo ymentUK unemployment has probably already risen above 2 million by the time Decembers data is released in March, with the original UK unemployment forecast for a rise to 2.6 million by April 2010 now destined to be breached as the UK economy targets a severe recession on par with that of the early 1980s rather than the more milder one of the 1990s. Increasing expectations are that the UK economy will set about by 3% GDP during 2009 which implies that the UK is heading for an unemployment rate that could pass above 3,000,000 by early 2010. Therefore this confirms that the UK housing market is at least 15 months away from a period of stabilising in nominal terms i.e. where house prices stop falling. The actual trigger for a resumption of the housing shucks market would be a sustained period of falling unemployment with the trigger level of 2,000,000 expected to act as a strong marker for year on year housing market recovery as occurred following the last housing bear market. This su ggests that the housing market may not recruit on an sustainable up trend for as longs as another 4 years and thus points to a period of house price doldrums that will following the current crash in UK house prices. http//www.marketoracle.co.ukCredit Cruncha identification crunch is a period in the economy, distinct from a recession or depression, but potentially heralding one or the other.Credit crunch including mortgage loans, personal loans, car finance, credit cards and other type o f lending become much harder to obtain in a credit crunch.Credit crunch has completely changed the face of the globular economy with hundreds of business. From banks and capital markets at given interest rates. The reduced availability of credit can result from many factors, including an increased perception of risk on the part of lenders, ann imposition of credit controls, or a sharp restriction of the money supply.www.teachmefinance.comA sudden reduction in the availability of loans and other types of credit Eg Lehman brothers.Supply Factor Affecting House PriceImmigration There had been a large influx of over 800,000 migrants from the Accession states who contributed towards the buy to let market bubbleStrong UK Economy The UK economy at the centre of the worlds credit bubble continued to outperform mainland Europe, which looked on with envy from the less flexible and more regulated European countries of France and Germany, though as we find out during 2009, not participating in the credit boom did not help them as many of the European banks become belatedly suckered into buying U.S. subprime mortgage backed toxic securitized debt as one the last to fling themselves onto the debt derivatives pyramid.

A stereotype is defined by the Oxford Dictionary
A stereotype is be by the Oxford DictionaryE rattling individualistic holds stereotypes. A stereotype is defined by the Oxford Dictionary of Psychology (pg. 730) as a relatively fixed and oversimplified generalisation about a sort or class of peck, usu wholey instruction on prohibit or unfavourable characteristics. When batch put too much faith in stereotypical descriptions of people they enkindle become prejudice and kindle often discriminate against other groups. This can be real harmful and has led to countless atrocities, such as the racial purging of the Jews by the Nazis. Prejudices still be universe fought by means of laws, such as Equal Opportunities legislation. However, the subject being discussed is not whether stereotypes are harmful or unspoiltifiable it is whether they hold a practical purpose, or are wasteful. It is generally the common consensus that stereotyping and prejudice should not continue. However without stereotypes we may find the affable wor ld a roach harder to perceive and understand. We rely on stereotypes to help us function in society. With such a diverse population, the environment we live in could be very confusing. Unfortunately stereotypes may block out a lot of what makes our society so diverse and just group people into simple categories. They may besides affect peoples choices in life. Career paths people may want to take could seem inappropriate for someone in their group and so are avoided. From an evolutionary standpoint, stereotypes must rescue a use because they exist. the great unwashed start creating stereotypes from a very young age and they are hard to break. However, having a purpose doesnt expel the fact that stereotypes are wasteful. The main beneficial use of stereotypes is that they greatly speed up cognitive processing. The world is full of people, they all look unique and the all behave differently. If each person chose to actively perceive and evaluate every individual they encountered, th ere wouldnt be much time for anything else. This is why stereotypes exist. People can glance around a room, see a spectrum of faces and not have to stop to think about each person. This frees up the brain for more central tasks.Macrae, Milne, Bodenhausen (1994) as cited by Taylor, Peplau, Sears (pg. 184). conducted an experiment to see if the priming of stereotypes can leave the brain freer to process other discipline. Students were presented with a list of trait words for an individual and, at the same time, information about Indonesia. Half of these students were first given a group go after for the individual, e.g. B lose or Italian. Those given the group label remembered more traits that were label consistent and more information about Indonesia. This demonstrates that stereotypes make the social world a lot easier to process and are definitely very useful. However, this oversimplification of the world we see can lead us to prejudice against other groups, and can lead to dis crimination. People often look only at the negative characteristics of a group. In doing this we may waste the important contributions that these different groups perspectives can offer.Taylor, Fiske, Eticoff, Ruderman (1978) as cited by Taylor et al. (pg. 185) asked participants to observe a conversation between people of a mix of races. When asked to remember which individual made certain contributions the participants would often only be able to remember the race of the individual. This put downs that people often point far too much emphasis on group membership and can ignore the attributes of the individual. This can lead people to ignore information that comes from a source that they may deem inferior. The second beneficial use of stereotypes is their ability to increase individuals ego observe. Everyone has the desire to increase their ego esteem and a lack of self esteem can lead to depression and social isolation. Stereotypes can improve an individuals self esteem throu gh a number of ways.Tajfel (1982) as cited by Taylor et al. (pg. 188) proposed the Social Identity Theory. This is the process by which people categorise the social world into in-groups, in which the individual is a member, and out-groups, into which everyone else is categorised. People can derive their self esteem from their inclusion in the in-group if they perceive their group to be superior to other groups. This is theory is enhanced by Tajfel, Billig, Bundy, Flament, (1971) as cited by Taylor et al. (pg. 186) and their theory of In-group Favouritism. People will automatically positively discriminate towards their in-group, which promotes the status of a superior in-group. Also Ethnocentrism can play a part in promoting self esteem, through the assumption that the in-group is the centre of the social world and is superior to all out-groups.While many people may argue that deriving self esteem from the view of superiority is immoral, that is not the topic being discussed. High self esteem is an advantage to all people, and so any method for raising self esteem can be seen as useful. But this method for promoting self esteem does come with disadvantages. The Social Identity theory can have quite negative effects on peoples lives. If an individual holds a negative image of the in-group or the in-group is associated with a negative stereotype then this can be harmful to the individuals self esteem. Asgari, Dasgupta Gilbert Cote (2010) undertook a longitudinal record into how exposure to successful in-group members affected female students. They found that not only did the students have to have frequent get to with the role model, but they too had to have evaluated the contact to be meaningful. This however not only improved their self concept of their in-group it also raised their race aspirations and their engagement in their studies. This in turn led to improved academic success. This study shows that victims of stereotyping can often believe those ste reotypes so much that it takes repeated, powerful interaction with stereotype inconsistent individuals to feel that they too can break out of the stereotype they find themselves in.People that are candid to negative stereotypes are also subject to stereotype threat. Stereotype threat was first proposed by Aronson and Steele (1995) and it occurs when members of a group find themselves subject to a negative stereotype. It results in the individual being aware that they are being stereotypically evaluated and so their performance, in areas associated with the stereotype, suffer. However, stereotype threat has been shown to spill over into many areas of everyday living. Being in a stigmatized group can contribute to a number of societal problems, such as aggression, obesity, decision making and impulse control (Inzlicht Kang. 2010).This serves to maintain the negative stereotype. However the study by Inzlicht and Kang was a correlation study, and so cause and effect could not be infe rred. This is one example of how stereotypes can be self fulfilling prophecies. However they can also act in a positive direction. If a person is aware of a positive stereotype about them then they can have an improved performance. Shih, Pittinsky Ambady (1999) as cited by Taylor et al. (pg. 172) showed that Asian women performed better at a maths test when the Asian stereotype was cued. However they performed worse when the women stereotype was cued. These studies show how stereotypes can have a dramatic effect on our behaviour without any conscious action.Stereotyping can also have affects on career choices. Women exposed to primes of gender inconsistent roles (e.g. a female surgeon) showed lower enthusiasm for these roles because of upward social comparison threat (Rudman Phelan. 2010). They felt threatened by being outperformed by someone in their in-group. If women didnt believe that it was rare for women to be able to become a surgeon, they may not have felt this comparison t hreat. Also students are often choosing to not go into a career in sales because of their stereotypes about salesmen. (Lee, Sandfield Bhaliwal. 2007). Students think of salesmen as pushy and unsatisfied, hence they assume that if they were to go into sales then they would waste the time they spent on their degree. This cuts off a career path that may have been right for some students, but they film not to take it because of the stereotypes they hold.So while stereotypes do have some definite uses, they also create waste. Stereotypes speed up cognitive processing, which is necessary for people to function in the diverse social environment in which we find ourselves. This is at the cost of the individual we lose focus of each person and just push people into categories. Stereotypes can increase the self esteem of some. However not all can gain the benefit of this boost in social identity. Stereotype threat can have a very negative effect of peoples lives. Stereotypes can waste the potential of many people that have denied themselves, or have been denied through prejudice. Stereotypes have led to the needless waste of life in wars and through civil struggles for equality. Therefore, while stereotypes serve a purpose, they waste potential, information and happiness.

Evidenced Based Practice Guideline Essay -- Healthcare
IntroductionIn a fast-paced environment such as the emergency surgical incision, strong communication is imperative for a smooth working environment. Without proper communication evidence supports decreased clinical outcomes and increased clinical errors. A study highlighted in the center for healthcare informatics, discusses the varying communication patterns and issues that are experienced by clinicians that occupied various clinical roles. (Spencer, Logan & Coiera, 2002). A look at the current evidence-based employment guidelines, the clinical question utilized is as follows Among the ER staff nurses who received a monthly e-mail highlighting the essential points of the monthly staff meetings, what luck can demonstrate evidence of improved communication opposed to those that did not receive e-mail during a three-month period. The target population for this particular study is a twelve bed emergency room located in a rural town of less than 250,000. The emergency room has fourt een full-time employees, 11 female and three male. Ten nurses work day shift, while four nurses work night shift. The decision to split the groups properly and without bias would be the survival of the fittest of five dayshift nurses, two males and three females, and two night shift nurses, one male and one female who will receive electronic communication updates along with staff management meetings and minutes, selected randomly. The control group, the remaining seven nurses, all of which are female will not receive the same e-mail communications with updates to long-suffering care and an increase in the information regulated by the emergency room.Because of the small sample size of registered nurses currently working in the emergency department and the inability... ... small number of staff that was involved in this study, the short time frame that the study was conducted in, and the limited amount of published research on emails in the health care industries. It is apparent from my attempt that more research need to be made.Works CitedHuber, D. L. (2010). Change and innovation. In N. OBrien (Ed.), Leadership and Nursing Care precaution (p. 68).
